In the excitement of the highly anticipated first teaser trailer finally being released, we learned some exciting music-related news for The Wheel of Time show on Amazon Prime: confirmation of a composer, as well as two guests composers.

Lorne Balfe

Yesterday, showrunner Rafe Judkins participated in a Q&A session with lead actress Rosamund Pike in celebration of the release of the teaser trailer for the 1st season of The Wheel of Time.

In that Q&A Judkins was able to announce the replacement composer for David Buckley, who left the show some time in late 2020. Judkins confirmed that Lorne Balfe is the new composer for the show and that we had actually heard a tiny bit of the score in the logo release back in June. If you remember, we at WoTseries.com had speculated earlier this year Balfe might be the new composer.

As a reminder, Lorne Balfe is a Grammy-award winning composer for movies, television series, and video games. He is a protégé of acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer, and while he still does collaborate with him, Balfe is a prolific composer in his own right. He has composed for many different genres, including fantasy, and some of his most recent scores include work on Marvel’s Black Widow and Prime’s The Tomorrow War. His score for television show His Dark Materials was earned him ASCAP Composers’ Choice Award nominations for both “Television Composer of the Year” and “Television Theme of the Year”

Tommy Reilly & Roddy Hart

Also as spotted by our very own Eri, it looks like musicians Tommy Reilly and Roddy Hart wrote a song for the show. They revealed this on Twitter and Instagram, with Roddy Hart writing, “Wrote a cool old-school song for this epic series with @tommyreilly.”

The duo together composed the music for the zombie comedy-musical Anna and the Apocalypse, the 2019 movie Our Ladies, and three seasons of the Animaniacs revival, for which they won an Emmy.

Back in March of 2020, Rafe Judkins did an AMA session on Instagram in which he mentioned that in addition to music by the show’s composer (then David Buckley), there would also be “a few incredible musical guests.” While we don’t know exactly how the song written by Tommy Reilly and Roddy Hart will feature in the show, it’s possible it will be one of these songs written for a musical guest.

We can’t wait to hear more of the music of The Wheel of Time when it hits our screens on Friday, November 19th! What are your thoughts on these musical revelations? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
