The first director for season 3 of The Wheel of Time has been revealed and is a familiar face. According to a recently updated resume, Ciaran Donnelly will be returning to direct The Wheel of Time Season 3. The resume also states that he will be an executive producer for the season. It does not indicate how many or which episodes Donnelly will be directing.
Donnelly, as fans will know, directed the final two episodes of season 1 of The Wheel of Time. Donnelly faced some of the biggest challenges in season 1 with multiple shutdowns of filming, strict Covid restrictions for filming on-set, and the loss of a main character actor. He also delivered one of the most exciting and memorable scenes in a fantasy production, the cold open Blood Snow, in episode seven of season 1.
Season 3 Pre-Production Progress
The Wheel of Time is expected to go into production on season 3 sometime in 2023. In addition to the information we reported back in November, there have been more signs that the show has been quietly progressing towards filming.
In January 2023, members of the costume team took a brief trip to India to shop for fabrics and jewelry to use for season 3. We can’t wait to see what sort of costumes the team will create for season 3, as the brief glimpses we’ve gotten from season 2 look very exciting so far.
Additionally, casting calls for an Amazon/Sony production in Prague have been posted online. While we don’t know specific details for these casting calls, finding actors is one of the later steps during pre-production.
Finally, book consultant Sarah Nakamura recently took to Twitter to post her thoughts on her experience in the season 3 writers room. While she was careful not to say exactly where the writers are in the process, her response seems to indicate that she may soon be seeing sets or other filming locations.
The last 5 months in London creating S3 have been magic. I spent more time than ever in the Writers Room for the daunting & exciting process of framing out each episode. I’m grateful that this crew was so open to my in the moment reactions & feedback. The creative process is https://t.co/z70WRJ1n9c

When is Season 2 Releasing?
While updates about season 3 are exciting, we know that the question on the mind of many fans is: “When will we see season 2?!” Unfortunately, we won’t know an exact answer until we hear official word from Amazon.
Some fans have theorized that since the audiobook version of The Dragon Reborn by Rosamund Pike will be released on June 6, 2023, that we might expect a release date in early June. While we know this seems far away, an early June release would still fall within the normal range of Prime Video series release timeframes.
Prime Video has been revealing more about their 2023 releases each week, so hopefully, we will hear official word within the next couple of months!
In the meantime, check out our interview with Ciaran Donnelly and let us know what parts of the story you hope to see the director tackle in season 3.
I'm just a farm kid that grew up loving fantasy and science fiction. The Wheel of Time is my favorite book series. I love watching sports, reading, playing video games, and learning about the film making industry.
