The Nerdist is exclusively reporting that Meera Syal will play Verin Mathwin in The Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime. Back in October 2021, Rafe Judkins revealed at New York Comic Con that Meera Syal was cast in season 2. However, he did not specify her role, only saying she was playing one of the “most important characters in the series.” This left fans speculating ever since, with Verin as the most popular guess by far.
Important note: If you’re not a book reader, we recommend not searching Verin’s name online, as there may be spoilers associated for later in the series. You’ve been warned!
Verin Mathwin is an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah, first introduced in The Great Hunt. In the book, Moiraine spends some time searching for two Aes Sedai, Vandene and Adeleas, on her quest for knowledge about the Dragon and various prophecies; in the show, it’s highly possible Verin will take the place of those two Sisters. Moiraine wasn’t shielded in the books like she was at the end of season 1, so Moiraine may also be looking for a way to untie her shield.
In an unexpected turn of events, during the BAFTA award ceremony on May 14, 2023, a very brief clip of Meera as Verin played as part of her nomination compilation reel. In this one-second clip, Verin can be seen dressed in brown, removing her hood and looking upward. She appears to be in Tar Valon based on the background details.

Congratulations to Meera Syal on her BAFTA! Wheel of Time fans are all excited to see her bring Verin to life on screen. She will appear in season 2 and season 3. No release date has been announced for season 2, but it’s expected to air later in 2023. Season 3 is currently filming.
I'm a longtime SFF fan but Wheel of Time will always be my first love. I want to call myself Green Ajah, but--let's be real--I'm probably a Brown. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, writing, and getting lost in the wilderness.
