Interview with Madeleine Madden

Cait: Hi, I am Cait from WotSeries! Thanks for chatting with me today. I hope you’re excited for season three like we are!

Madeleine Madden: Absolutely!

Cait: Yay! Can you pick just one moment you are, like, most excited about for fans to see this season?

Madeleine Madden: I’m really excited for fans to see how we’ve brought Dreamwalking to the screen. That’s a massive, massive moment in the books and it’s a very informative moment for Egwene in her life and in evolving her skill sets. And yeah, I just, I think it’s it’s it’s a really exciting world that exists within the culture of the Aiel and something that I was really excited to be a part of. And shooting in South Africa. We got to you know bring the Aiel waste to life and that was truly magical. So I’m really excited for fans to see that.

Cait: Me too. In past interviews you shared a little bit about your connection to Egwene, like her sense of duty and the fact that she, like you, was raised by strong women. So I guess my question is, how else have you brought yourself to Egwene and what parts of Egwene have you brought back to yourself?

Madeleine Madden: I think I’ve really, Egwene’s taught me a lot about being an open sieve and whatever happens in life, you know, we need to move forward. And just forever evolving and changing. I feel like she is always reinventing herself. And that’s something I really admire about her…her openness and willingness just to throw herself into whatever experience she finds herself in.

I think I’m bringing a bit more, maybe like, still to Egwene this season…which I don’t know if that’s necessarily me or just like her time being a damane ,where she’s, I think, more observant now. Ad yeah, there’s a bit more of a steeliness to her, right.

Cait: Do you have any really exciting or surprising moments that happened on set that you can share?

Madeleine Madden: Yeah, I mean we were shooting in South Africa. And that was just, like, a sight to behold. There are these incredible dunes just out of Cape Town and the sand is like, you know, as white as bone. Like, it’s breathtaking.

And so we were shooting in these dunes at, you know, sunrise, and we’re there with like 400 of the supporting artists, all the cast, all of the crew…And that was just something. I was just having a pinch me moment, even though it was, like, very difficult because it was so hot. It was just…it’s amazing shooting in those conditions and in that landscape, you know. The landscape is like a character in itself in this series and the Aiel Waste is so important to the story. So it was really wonderful to be there.

Cait: Thank you. I’m so excited to see it on screen. So, I have seen a little bit of of the season, and I do know the books intimately, and it does seem like Egwene and Rand are coming towards the end of their romance. What hopes do you have for Egwene’s romantic future, past Rand?

Madeleine Madden: I think,  I feel I have an idea of where her romantic future will take her, but, I think for Egwene, she needs to fully do what she wants and needs in her life before she can almost consider, like, having a life partner. You know, I think her and Rand will always be anchored to each other and, you know, will always love each other and have that love that brings them back to each other. But I think for Egwene, she definitely feels like a bit of a lone wolf at the moment in the series. Egwene’s gotta do what Egwene’s gotta do.

Cait: Thank you so much. I appreciate your time today and I cannot want to see you on screen in just a few… less than two weeks!

Madeleine Madden: I know! It’s so exciting.
