We open on a gorgeous desert vista. Moiraine is on a rocky outcrop doing a bit of early morning yoga. She is speedrunning her bucket list by fiddling with that white orb from last episode, the Sakarnen, which is the most powerful sa’angreal (magic amplifier) in existence for women. 

She channels into it, creating massive weaves that blanket the desert. A surge of power nearly causes her to lose control and burn out, but Lan is there to catch her. We zoom out to see that the power flowing through the Sakarnen has completely reshaped the nearby landscape (oops).

The opening scene w/ Moiraine & the Sarkanen was really well done. The weaves looked beautiful & powerful, showing Moiraine struggling to channel so much of the Power.

And I really liked the sound design, it was buzzing, like she’s using electricity.

We fade to black for the abbreviated intro. We open in the Three Fold Land as our group travels away from Rhuidean.We learn that the rest of the Aiel clan chiefs must declare Rand to be the Car’a’Carn at a place called Alcair Dal and also that the Shaido were not thrilled when Rand returned and Muradin did not.

Siuan and Leane drop by for a visit to find out what Verin has been able to learn about the Black Ajah. Based on the way they work in cells called “hearts” Liandrin was able to pull together four hearts or twelve black sisters, but only 11 attacked them. Siuan suspects that Elaida is the 12th, but Verin counsels caution…

One of my favorite scenes in #WheelofTimeS3 is Elaida Sedai (Shoreh Aghdashloo) and Adeleas Sedai (Nila Aalia) conning each other in the White Tower corridor. Delicious acting by two champions! Can tell they were having a blast.

Far to the south, along the coast of the Aryth Ocean, Elayne, Nynaeve, and Mat are cooped up below decks on a boat bound for Tanchico. Elayne is being a cultural studies geek, Nynaeve is losing her lunch, and Mat has had it with both of them and just wants to get away.

Natti tries to grab the cage keys but is caught and drunk Dain starts to hurt her. Out of nowhere, weaves of air knock him back – there’s a “witch” somewhere! Natti claims it was her and Dain gives her to Valda, slicing off another piece of his heart.

Genuinely this was the first scene of E5 to get my eyes watery. Surface level, it’s a simple exchange that you’d almost take his “yes” as a given. But Min knows that it wasn’t freely given, & that Mat understands what she gave up for him 🥺

Elaida takes the bait and heads to the 13th Depository where she finds Joya and Amico contained. She did not come to play and quickly dispatches Amico once it’s clear that she will be of no use. Joiya puts on her grey ajah hat for a moment and decides that it’s time to negotiate but Elaida is having none of it.

Moiraine asks Egwene for her help to get a message to Siuan through Tel’aran’rhiod. Egwene agrees, even though she only just promised the wise ones that she wouldn’t enter the dream without their permission. She prepares to enter Moiraine’s dream and they arrive at a certain fish hut…

 


Moiraine confronts Siuan and tells her that she has been through Rhuidean and that two things are certain: The first is that if the tower doesn’t support Rand (vs. caging him) that he will lose the last battle and the second thing is… nevermind.
