We have arrived at the penultimate episode of this incredible season of The Wheel of Time. When watching that other major fantasy show we always used to steel ourselves “Welp… it’s the penultimate episode, who is going to die this season?” but WoT is different.

We all knew it was coming… violence in the Two Rivers. Will they be ready to face it? This week’s episode is called “Goldeneyes,” in which Perrin begins to embrace his role as a leader among the people of the Two Rivers.

We open on a gorgeous fly-in to a newly fortified Two Rivers village. Barricades are being constructed. Weapons are being forged. Villagers are training. Perrin looks on with pride.

The lookouts sound an alarm – trollocs approaching? It turns out to be a very ragged band of tuatha’an – the Tinkers – reeling from a trolloc attack the night before. With them are Ila and Aram, two of the people who sheltered Perrin and Egwene so long ago after their escape from Shadar Logoth. Raen, Aram’s grandfather, had been killed in the attack.

In another part of the village Square, Maksim is training the menfolk on the use of poisoned spears to hold a line. The cantankerous Cenn Buie tells Maksim off and wants his longbow. Maksim scoffs as he sends them off to grab their bows. While there’s a break in the training, Alanna saunters over to see how it’s going… he’s not optimistic.

Near the Winespring Inn, a hastily-made wolf head banner is unfurled atop a pole. Faile has been busy dropping hints about how much trollocs hate wolves and Perrin is already over it. He doesn’t want the mantle of leadership but Faile drops some truth bombs about how they follow Perrin because he’s their hometown boy and if he can fight monsters, so can they.

But then, the alarm bells sound once again. This time, trollocs are spotted on the ridge. Leaders gather in the Winespring to review the battle plans. The villagers are funnelling the trollocs into the mountain pass in hopes of pulling a Leonidas. If the pass fails, they’ll hold the gate. If the gate fails, they’ll hold the square. If the square fails, they’ll hold the Winespring. If all seems lost, the Tuatha’an are charged with taking the children of the Two Rivers and fleeing through a secret passage dug in the inn.

He has to shut it permanently. Perrin orders him to go find a Stedding where he can recuperate from The Longing and where he can share their story, should they not withstand the Shadow’s advance.

Perrin was never one for big speeches, and so instead of some rousing oratory, we hear his bass voice begin to sing “Weep For Manetheren” – the same song that our young heroes sang as Moiraine whisked them away from their village all that time ago. The whole village joins in, beating their chests for rhythm.

A trolloc horn blares as the song ends. Up the hill, pas several rows of spiked barricares, a mass of trollocs and human darkfriends lets out a yell. It’s go time. Maksim commands the Two Rivers longbowmen… NOCK! DRAW! LOOSE! And the battle is joined.

Up in the mountains, Bain, Chiad, and Loial scout the forces guarding the waygate. The darkfriends have only left a small contingent of guards, assuming the villagers will be occupied. The Maidens of the Spear were… unimpressed.

Loial wields a massive hammer decorated with leaves of Avendesora – the tree at the center of Rhuidean. Stone Avendesora leaves are also keys to use waygates without the One Power. Bain and Chiad have their spears and bucklers and the trio assaults the darkfriends holding the area.

Wave after wave of arrows fly from Two Rivers longbows but still the trollocs advance. Perrin tells Maksim that it’s time and he concentrates intently on the taste of fresh figs to get Alanna’s attention.

She’s been through so so much. You could just feel her grief in this scene. Priyanka’s performance and delivery this season has been incredible!!

 

In the pass, the fighters look up at the angry, swirling black sky. Perrin and Maksim shout to fall back. No, no, no… fall back FURTHER! And just then, the clouds begin to release massive spikes of icy hail on the upper portion of the pass, impaling trolloc and human alike.

More… she needs MORE. Alanna screams as she pulls every scrap of the One Power that she can. Her cheeks begin to glow as she reaches her breaking point and then releases.

In the forest just outside of town, the Tuatha’an have made it… but so has a wolf-faced trolloc. Aram, with a wee baby tucked inside a Tinker Boba wrap, tells everyone to run (did they serpentine?). He hides behind a tree as the trolloc vaults past and jumpscares the entire audience.

The baby let out just small a whimper but that was enough to let the trolloc know that it left snacks behind. Aram fends it off and it drops its sword. He knows that he and that baby will surely die if he doesn’t pick it up…

I’m just saying that you can do a thing (say, stab a Trolloc) and you don’t have to make it your whole personality. You can put the sword down, pat the baby whose life you saved, and never kill anything again! Have the Tuatha’an considered this

In the square, the chaotic battle continues. Across the way, Padan Fain makes sure that Perrin sees him and brazenly slits a villager’s throat. Perrin smashes his way through several trollocs and Fain begins to run (again). Perrin pulls a Mjolnir and launches the hammer at Fain, probably shattering some ribs at the very least. He lets the adrenaline rush of battle cool and demands of Fain, who had sold them all Bel TIne lanterns for years, WHY?!?! Why did you do this?

Outside of the waygate, Bain and Chiad continue the fight but they are growing weary. They are both knocked to the ground as the waygate explodes in an orange gout of power, destroying the remaining assailants.

In the village, Perrin turns to see the massive flash from the mountains and hears the explosion. How about those reinforcements now, Fain? He smells Fains fear… fear of not completing the task to which the Dark One had assigned. Maybe fear of something else. He agrees to call off the attack in exchange for his life.

I first found WoT as a high school freshman in 1994. From a green ajah Aes Sedai halloween costume in 1997, to creating an access database of every WoT character in 1999, to the absolute pleasure of meeting Robert Jordan himself twice, my obsession with this series launched a lifelong love of high fantasy.
