After almost a year and a half of waiting, The Wheel of Time’s second season finally has a trailer.
Prime Video’s accompanying press release calls this the first trailer, implying we’ll have another before the second season premiers on September 1. It also confirms that season 2 is based on The Great Hunt with elements of The Dragon Reborn. But perhaps more exciting is confirmation that the trailer’s release “heralds the return of #WOTWednesdays, which will see weekly Season Two assets and news break every Wednesday moving forward, through the new season’s September 1 launch and beyond.” The press release describes season 2 as follows:
Season Two of The Wheel of Time – based on the second novel in Robert Jordan’s epic book series, The Great Hunt, as well as some elements of the third novel, The Dragon Reborn – was filmed in the Czech Republic, Morocco, and Italy […] Though Rand thought he destroyed the Dark One, evil is not gone from the world. In Season Two, threats new and very old seek out the young friends from the Two Rivers, now scattered over the world. The woman who found and guided them is now powerless to help, and so they must find other sources of strength. In each other, or themselves. In the Light … or the Dark.
Note: Minor spoilers for The Great Hunt, The Dragon Reborn are below.
There’s a whole lot to unpack with this trailer, from the Darkfriend Social to the Accepted test, Aiel to Seanchan, and Cairhien to Falme. The Seanchan look satisfyingly alien and terrifying, and even the briefest shots of Egwene as a damane are enough to break our hearts. Rand meeting Logain and Siuan in Cairhien? A mysterious figure with a flaming sword? Mat reunited with the dagger? And, of course, our first glimpse of Natasha O’Keeffe as Lanfear, whose blue garb is a clever visual nod to Rand’s original mentor, Moiraine.
We’ll have another article breaking down the trailer in more detail, but for now, enjoy watching it another time or two (or hundred).
Season two will release on September 1, 2023, and will contain eight episodes written by Rafe Judkins, Amanda Kate Shuman, Justine Juel Gillmer, Dave Hill, Katherine B McKenna, Rammy Park, John McCutcheon, Rohit Kumar, and Timothy Earle. I'm a longtime SFF fan but Wheel of Time will always be my first love. I want to call myself Green Ajah, but--let's be real--I'm probably a Brown. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, writing, and getting lost in the wilderness.
JOY!!
